Fake Robinhood Free Stock Phishing Scam
Criminals create fake Robinhood referral pages or social-media posts claiming users can receive free shares of a popular company by signing up or verifying their existing account — leading to a phishing page or a cryptocurrency scam tied to a fake 'Robinhood token'.

Robinhood built a large customer base partly through its 'free stock' referral programme, where new and existing users receive random shares for referring friends. This well-known promotion has been used as bait in phishing campaigns that mimic the referral flow to harvest login credentials or personal information from existing and prospective Robinhood users.
The fake campaign typically appears as a social-media post or online advertisement claiming that Robinhood is distributing free stock in a high-profile company to celebrate a milestone or anniversary. A button takes the user to a fake Robinhood sign-up or login page. The page asks for name, email, date of birth, and Social Security Number to 'set up the free stock account' — collecting valuable personal information that has nothing to do with Robinhood.
A more recent variant blends the Robinhood brand with cryptocurrency fraud, promoting a fake 'Robinhood Token' or 'RH Coin' that purports to be a new Robinhood-branded cryptocurrency you can claim for free but which requires connecting a real wallet — a wallet-drainer scam using stolen Robinhood branding.
How this scam works on the Robinhood brand
The real Robinhood free-stock programme is accessed only through the Robinhood app or at robinhood.com, using a referral link shared between existing users. Robinhood has never offered free stock via standalone social-media advertisements unconnected to a real referral. Robinhood does not operate a cryptocurrency token.
Fake promotions are often timed around real Robinhood news events (an IPO, a product launch, a market milestone) to seem topical. They use high-value stock tickers — 'Get a free Tesla share!' — to make the offer irresistible. The urgency is enforced by a countdown timer: 'Offer expires in 2 hours'.
Victims who enter their personal details have their information sold or used for identity fraud. Victims who connect a wallet in the 'Robinhood Token' variant may have their entire crypto wallet drained. In both cases, there is no free stock and no Robinhood involvement.
Common red flags
- A social-media ad or post offering free shares of a specific company via a link — not a referral from a friend
- Landing page URL is not robinhood.com
- A sign-up form that asks for your SSN before you have done anything with the app
- A 'Robinhood Token' or 'RH Coin' — Robinhood does not issue a cryptocurrency token
- Countdown timer creating urgency to claim the free stock immediately
- Request to connect a crypto wallet to receive a 'Robinhood stock reward'
- No mention of the offer inside the actual Robinhood app when you log in
How to protect yourself
- Verify any free-stock promotion by checking the official Robinhood app — real promotions appear there
- Access Robinhood only at robinhood.com or through the official app stores
- Never enter your SSN on a web form before establishing you are on the genuine Robinhood platform
- Do not connect a crypto wallet to any site claiming to offer Robinhood-branded tokens
- Report fake Robinhood social-media accounts using the platform's impersonation-report tool
- Treat countdown timers and 'limited time' urgency as manipulation signals, not genuine scarcity
- Check the Better Business Bureau or consumer protection sites if you are uncertain about a promotion

Frequently asked questions
Does Robinhood give free stocks for signing up?
Robinhood has run referral programmes offering fractional shares to new users referred by existing customers. These promotions are only accessible through the official Robinhood app or website — not through standalone social-media advertisements.
Is there a Robinhood cryptocurrency token?
Robinhood offers crypto trading through its app (Robinhood Crypto) but does not issue its own branded cryptocurrency token. Any claim of a 'Robinhood Token' or 'RH Coin' is a scam.
What if I entered my SSN on a fake Robinhood site?
Visit identitytheft.gov (US) immediately and follow the personalised recovery plan. Consider placing a credit freeze with all three major credit bureaux to prevent new accounts being opened in your name.
