Fake Coinbase Customer Service Chatbot Scams
Criminals operate fake Coinbase support chatbots through sponsored search results and lookalike websites, guiding victims through credential-harvesting flows or directing them to send test transactions to scammer addresses.

Coinbase users who encounter account issues — locked accounts, delayed transfers, failed identity verification — frequently search online for support. Scammers intercept these searches by running paid ads for 'Coinbase Support Chat' that lead to convincing fake portals with chatbot interfaces mimicking Coinbase's customer support experience.
Unlike MetaMask, Coinbase is a custodial exchange with a real customer support infrastructure, which makes the fake chatbot scenario even more believable: users expect to be able to chat with a support agent. The fake chatbot collects account details, verification codes, and in some cases directs victims to send a 'test transaction' to prove wallet ownership — the 'test' transaction is simply a theft.
Coinbase's genuine chat support is accessible only from within a logged-in Coinbase account at coinbase.com or through the Coinbase app. Coinbase does not operate external support chat sites, and its support team will never request a test transaction or an account password.
How this scam works on the Coinbase brand
The fake chatbot site uses Coinbase's blue-and-white branding and opens with a greeting referencing common issues — 'Are you experiencing login problems, a pending transaction, or an account restriction?' The bot then guides the user through an account verification flow: email address, partial account details, and then the SMS verification code sent to their phone.
The attacker uses the verification code in real time to log into the victim's Coinbase account from a new device. Once inside, the attacker initiates a withdrawal or changes the account email. Some variants add a 'live agent escalation' where the attacker asks the victim to send a small amount of crypto to a 'wallet address provided by Coinbase support' as a 'test to confirm your account is not restricted' — this test transaction is simply sent to the attacker.
Real Coinbase support agents never ask users to send crypto as a verification step and never request account passwords or verification codes outside of the official Coinbase interface.
