Telegram's end-to-end encryption and large group capabilities make it a favoured platform for long-distance romance scammers once initial contact has been established elsewhere. The perceived privacy of Telegram messaging increases victims' sense of intimacy and makes them less inclined to share conversation screenshots with friends or authorities.
Scammers may also use Telegram's 'secret chat' feature specifically to prevent message forwarding, reducing the chance that anyone else will see the content and raise the alarm.
How this scam works on Telegram
Initial contact often occurs on another platform — Instagram, Facebook, or a dating app — before the scammer insists on moving to Telegram for 'privacy'. On Telegram, the romantic relationship deepens through daily messages and occasional voice notes.
The scammer claims to be working abroad. Financial requests emerge in the form of emergency transfers to cover professional setbacks, funds to visit the victim, or investment opportunities presented as exclusive. Telegram's crypto wallet integration is sometimes used to request cryptocurrency payments.
Messages may be set to auto-delete, destroying evidence of the financial requests.

Frequently asked questions
Is Telegram safer for romantic communication than other apps?
Telegram does offer end-to-end encryption in secret chats, but this does not make it safer for users — it primarily protects the scammer by preventing evidence recovery. The platform's privacy features are routinely exploited to conceal fraud.
