Discord's giveaway culture — servers frequently run genuine prize draws for gaming items, software licences, and merchandise — makes the platform receptive to prize notification fraud. An announcement from a bot styled as a well-known brand or gaming company blends naturally into this context.
Because Discord giveaway bots are widely used for legitimate purposes, users may be less likely to question a prize notification that uses the same format and command structure as genuine giveaway tools.
How this scam works on Discord
A Discord bot announces that a user has been selected as the winner of a prize draw. The prize notification DM contains a link to claim the award — typically a gift card, gaming subscription, or hardware item. The claim link leads to a phishing page requesting the victim's email address, account login, or card details for delivery.
Some operators compromise popular servers' giveaway bots, redirecting genuine prize notifications to phishing pages. Others create near-identical bot usernames and claim to be relaying a prize from a well-known gaming or tech brand.
Post-claim follow-up scams also occur: a second contact claims there is a delivery fee or tax to pay before the prize is dispatched.
Common red flags
- Prize notification DM from a Discord bot or account for a draw you did not enter
- Claim link requesting login credentials or card details
- Bot username that closely mirrors a well-known brand's giveaway bot with minor variations
- Post-claim request for a delivery fee or tax payment
- Prize described as expiring within minutes to prevent the victim researching the claim
How to protect yourself
- Verify prize notifications by checking the server's announcement channel for a corresponding official post
- Never enter card details or login credentials on a site reached through a Discord prize notification
- Contact the server administrator directly if you receive an unexpected prize DM to verify its authenticity
- Report the bot or account to Discord Trust & Safety immediately
- Do not pay any fee to claim a Discord prize — genuine prizes are delivered free of charge
How to report it
- Right-click the bot or account and select 'Report' to flag it to Discord Trust & Safety
- Alert server moderators so they can audit their giveaway bot's integrity
- Report the phishing site to your national cybercrime authority
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if a Discord giveaway bot is legitimate?
Verify the bot's exact username matches the server's previously announced giveaway tool. Genuine giveaway bots only notify genuine entrants and will not request card details or a delivery fee. If in doubt, ask the server administrator directly whether the notification is genuine before clicking any link.
