TikTok's integrated shopping feature allows hosts to sell products in real time during a livestream, and millions of viewers browse and buy during these sessions daily. This real-time, social format creates powerful pressure to purchase — hosts auction off items with a countdown, claim limited stock, and foster a community atmosphere that lowers buyer scepticism.
Scammers exploit this by running their own livestreams — or by hijacking the style of legitimate sellers — to sell counterfeit goods, collect payments outside the platform's protections, or vanish after viewers deposit money for a product that is never dispatched.
How this scam works on TikTok
A TikTok livestream hosts a high-energy sale of branded goods — cosmetics, electronics, fashion — at prices far below retail. The host creates urgency by counting down available stock and showing viewer comments 'buying'. Products shown are sample images or props; what is shipped, if anything, is a cheap substitute or nothing at all.
Some scammers direct viewers to pay via a direct bank transfer or an external link — both of which bypass TikTok's buyer protection. Others sell on TikTok Shop legitimately just long enough to build star ratings, then fulfil orders with counterfeit or worthless items. Dispute resolution is available for TikTok Shop purchases, but many victims are unaware of the process.
Common red flags
- Host directs you to pay outside TikTok Shop, via bank transfer or a third-party link
- Prices are drastically lower than any legitimate retailer for branded products
- Stock countdown restarts or the 'last item' appears multiple times
- Account has limited live history despite large follower numbers
- Product reviews on the associated TikTok Shop listing are generic or recently posted in bulk
- Host refuses to show product details clearly or evades questions about authenticity
How to protect yourself
- Only pay through TikTok Shop's official checkout to retain buyer protection
- Check the seller's shop ratings, return policy, and number of fulfilled orders
- Search the product name and seller account independently before purchasing
- Never transfer money directly to a host outside the platform
- Screenshot product claims and delivery promises during the livestream
How to report it
- Report the TikTok account and livestream using the in-app report function
- If you paid through TikTok Shop and did not receive your order, open a dispute through TikTok's resolution centre
- Report to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov (US) or your national consumer authority
Frequently asked questions
Does TikTok Shop offer buyer protection?
Yes, purchases made through TikTok Shop's checkout are eligible for a dispute and refund process. Purchases made outside the platform — via direct payment links — have no TikTok protection.
How can I tell if goods in a livestream are counterfeit?
Ask the host to show authentication tags or receipts during the stream, check the price against official retail, and look for other customers' post-delivery reviews before buying.
