Instagram Shopping has made the platform a significant e-commerce destination, but its accessibility also means fraudulent sellers can set up convincing storefronts with minimal barriers. The integration of product catalogues, shoppable posts, and in-app checkout creates a seamless buying experience that can be replicated by scam operations.
Because Instagram is associated with aspirational brands and lifestyle content, users may be more susceptible to purchasing impulsively from accounts that project the right aesthetic, regardless of whether the business is legitimate.
How this scam works on Instagram
A fraudulent account builds an Instagram presence with curated product imagery and lifestyle posts. Instagram Shopping is enabled, and product tags are applied to posts. Buyers scroll their feed, click a tagged product, and complete a purchase within the app.
After payment, goods are not delivered, are significantly different from the listing, or arrive in poor condition with no recourse available. Some scam stores also collect personal information during checkout for use in identity theft.
Complaints are managed by blocking customers or deleting comments, and the account may be abandoned after a busy selling period.
Common red flags

- Product prices are very low relative to comparable items in established stores

- Shipping and returns policies are vague or located only in a hard-to-find bio link
- Independent search for the business name returns no results outside Instagram
- The account's follower engagement appears inauthentic — low comments relative to likes
