The influencer marketing ecosystem on Instagram has normalised discount codes as a standard tool for creators to monetise their audiences. Scammers exploit this familiarity by inserting fake codes into content designed to mimic legitimate creator promotions.
Because followers of an influencer or brand account expect discount codes, they apply minimal scrutiny when one appears — creating an unusually effective phishing vector.
How this scam works on Instagram
A fake influencer account or compromised genuine account posts a promotional Story or feed post offering followers a significant discount via a code and link. The link directs to a spoofed brand website where checkout collects payment and personal data.
In other cases the code is real but the affiliate scheme is fraudulent: the buyer pays full or reduced price but the commission goes to a scammer who has registered as an affiliate with false information. Some code promotions are designed purely to harvest email addresses and phone numbers via a 'code registration' form.
Instagram Stories are particularly used for these scams because the 24-hour expiry destroys the evidence automatically.
Common red flags
- Discount offered is unusually high — 60% or more off established brands
- Story or post directs to a link-in-bio URL that differs from the brand's official domain
- Code 'registration' requires personal information beyond an email address
- The promoting account has gained followers very rapidly or has suspiciously high engagement
- The brand has not confirmed the promotion on its own verified Instagram account
- Checkout on the linked site uses an unrecognised payment processor
How to protect yourself
- Verify discount codes directly on the brand's official website before using a link from Instagram
- Compare the URL in any bio link carefully against the genuine brand domain
- Do not submit payment details on a checkout site reached via an Instagram influencer link without verifying legitimacy
- Check the brand's own verified Instagram account for confirmation of any promotion
- Report accounts promoting fake codes to Instagram using the report feature
How to report it
- Report the Instagram account or Story using the in-app report feature
- Notify the brand whose name is being used through their official contact channels
- Submit a complaint to your national consumer protection body if personal data was captured
Frequently asked questions
How can I tell if a discount code from an Instagram influencer is legitimate?
Go directly to the brand's website and check whether the code works there. Search the brand's verified Instagram account to see if the promotion is mentioned. If the code only works on a site accessed through the influencer's specific link, treat it with caution.
