Reddit hosts a large ecosystem of buy-sell-trade communities where users exchange everything from trading cards and video games to electronics and collectibles. The reputation system built into these communities — based on user flair and trade verification threads — creates a sense of accountability that fraudsters actively work to circumvent or fake.
New or freshly created accounts regularly enter active trading subreddits and post listings that are difficult to distinguish from genuine offers, relying on the community's high transaction volume and good-faith culture to complete a quick fraudulent sale before scrutiny arrives.
How this scam works on Reddit
A seller posts a listing in a relevant subreddit with photos, a fair price, and a comment section that looks active and positive. On closer inspection, complimentary comments may be from alts controlled by the same operator. A buyer agrees to purchase and sends payment via a non-reversible method such as Venmo friends-and-family, Zelle, or cryptocurrency.
After payment the seller provides a fake tracking number or claims the parcel was lost in transit, stalling for time. Eventually contact ceases. The account may continue listing other items under the same or a related username, targeting multiple buyers before community moderators act.
In more sophisticated versions, the fraudster builds flair legitimately over several smaller genuine trades before executing a larger-scale fraud — a deliberate long-game approach.
Common red flags
- Seller account has limited Reddit history outside of the specific trading subreddit
- Flair count appears recently acquired or comments verifying trades are from low-activity accounts
- Pressure to complete payment quickly before a 'deal expires'
- Request for Venmo/Zelle via friends-and-family or cryptocurrency to avoid transaction fees
- Tracking information provided is invalid or shows delivery to a different address or region
- Seller becomes unresponsive shortly after payment confirmation
How to protect yourself
- Read the specific subreddit's verification guide before any transaction and follow it exactly
- Check that confirming trade comments come from established accounts with substantive post history, not clearly new accounts
- Whenever possible, pay via PayPal Goods and Services to retain chargeback rights
- Request a short video of the specific item before payment, not just static photos
- Start with a smaller transaction if you are new to a community or a seller is new to you
How to report it
- Report the seller's post and account to subreddit moderators using the report button
- Post in the subreddit's scam-warning or negative-feedback thread to alert other potential buyers
- File a complaint with your payment provider if you paid in a way that may allow a dispute or chargeback
Frequently asked questions
Are established Reddit flair counts reliable indicators of trustworthiness?
Flair adds some accountability but can be built through small genuine trades before a large fraud or obtained through comment manipulation. Always verify trade confirmation comments come from authentic long-standing accounts.
