Fake government grant scams on Discord tend to target student, low-income, and community-support servers where members may be actively seeking financial assistance. An announcement from what appears to be a government-backed scheme or approved partner can generate immediate interest and bypass the scepticism users might apply in other contexts.
Discord's role system is exploited by some operators: accounts with official-looking role badges appear to carry server authority, lending their announcements more credibility than ordinary member posts.
How this scam works on Discord
A server announcement — often from a bot or an account given a custom role badge — posts about a new government emergency fund, student support payment, or energy assistance grant. Members are invited to DM the announcing account to begin an application. The application process collects name, address, national ID number, and bank details, after which a small administration fee is requested to process the award.
Once the fee is paid, the account becomes unresponsive. The collected personal data is also used for identity fraud downstream.
Some operators run the entire process through a Discord bot that simulates a formal application portal, complete with reference numbers and automated email confirmations to a throwaway address.
Common red flags
- Discord announcement about a government grant scheme with a DM-to-apply process
- Account with an official-looking role badge that was created recently
- Application process requesting national ID, bank account details, and a fee via Discord
- Automated reference numbers and confirmation messages from a bot
- Server announcement that does not link to an independently verifiable government website
How to protect yourself
- Verify any grant scheme through the official government website before providing any details
- Understand that legitimate government grants are not administered through Discord DMs
- Report the server announcement and account to Discord Trust & Safety
- Do not pay any fee as part of a grant application — genuine grants are free to apply for
How to report it
- Report the account and the server announcement to Discord Trust & Safety
- Alert server moderators so they can remove the announcement and investigate the account
- File a report with your national fraud authority if personal data or fees were provided
Frequently asked questions
How can I tell if a Discord server is legitimately connected to a government scheme?
Look for a verified link to the programme on the official government website. Legitimate government schemes will have a dedicated page on a government-registered domain that references any Discord community. Applications will always be completed on the official government website, never via Discord DM.
