Fake TikTok Gift Card Payment Demand Scam
Scammers impersonating TikTok support or TikTok Shop demand victims pay alleged account fees, advertising balances, or dispute penalties using TikTok gift cards or other gift cards — a payment method TikTok never requires.

TikTok allows users to purchase TikTok Coins (the in-app currency) using TikTok gift cards redeemable through the app. Like all legitimate platforms, TikTok will never ask users to purchase gift cards to settle account fees, resolve disputes, pay advertising invoices through unofficial channels, or avoid account suspension.
Criminals exploit the relative novelty of TikTok's gift card and TikTok Shop ecosystem to confuse victims who may not be familiar with what is and is not a legitimate TikTok payment request. Younger users who are active on TikTok and who may have less experience recognising financial scams are particularly targeted.
The scam combines the urgency of an account suspension threat with the false legitimacy of the TikTok brand to pressure rapid action.
How this scam works on the TikTok brand
A creator or TikTok Shop seller receives a DM or email purportedly from 'TikTok Creator Support' stating that their account has been flagged for unpaid advertising fees or a TikTok Shop policy violation. To avoid a permanent ban, they must pay a penalty fee using TikTok gift cards available at retail stores. The message provides a support number to call once the cards are purchased.
When the victim calls, a 'TikTok representative' instructs them to scratch the card and read out the numeric code. The code is immediately redeemed and the money is gone. The account suspension threat was entirely fabricated.
A variant targets viewers rather than creators: a comment or viral-style message promises free TikTok Coins or exclusive content in exchange for a gift card code — the coins are never delivered.
Common red flags
- TikTok will never require you to buy physical gift cards to resolve an account issue.
- Legitimate TikTok notices appear inside the TikTok app in your inbox — not via external emails or unsolicited DMs.
- The message creates a false deadline, threatening a permanent ban within hours.
- The support number is not listed anywhere on tiktok.com/legal or the in-app Help Center.
- The 'representative' asks you to stay on the phone while purchasing cards and immediately reads the codes.
- Offers of free Coins or exclusive access in exchange for a gift card code.
How to protect yourself
- Verify account notices by checking TikTok's in-app Inbox > System Notifications — all official TikTok communications appear there.
- Never purchase gift cards to resolve an online account issue with any platform.
- Contact TikTok support only through the in-app Help Center or support.tiktok.com.
- Warn other creators in your community, especially newer users, about these approaches.
- If you have already provided codes, report the fraudulent activity to the gift card retailer and to the FTC.
How to report it
- Report the scam account in TikTok: tap the three dots on the profile > Report > Spam or scam.
- Report to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- In the UK, report to Action Fraud at actionfraud.police.uk.
- File a report with the IC3 at ic3.gov if significant funds were lost.
Frequently asked questions
Does TikTok use gift cards to collect advertising or fee payments?
No. TikTok collects advertising payments through its official TikTok Ads Manager via credit card or bank transfer. Gift cards are only for purchasing TikTok Coins inside the app and are never used for account-related fees.
Where do real TikTok account notices appear?
Official TikTok policy notices and account warnings appear in your TikTok Inbox under System Notifications. Anything arriving via an external email, phone call, or DM that is not in that system inbox should be verified carefully.
A commenter on my TikTok video is offering free Coins for a gift card code — is this legitimate?
No. TikTok never distributes Coins through giveaways involving gift card codes. This is a standard gift card drain scam operating under TikTok's brand.
