Qatar's hosting of major international events has created surges in accommodation demand that fraudulent booking sites exploit. Counterfeit platforms advertise Doha hotels, desert glamping experiences, and event packages at attractive prices, collecting full payment before victims discover no booking was made.
The problem is most acute during periods when genuine accommodation sells out quickly, making the availability shown on scam sites seem like a valuable opportunity rather than a red flag.
How this scam works on Qatar
Fake sites appear in Google sponsored results for searches like 'Doha hotel packages' or 'Qatar event accommodation'. They mimic well-known booking platforms with hotel photos, star ratings, and a convincing checkout flow. Payment is processed through a plausible-looking gateway, and a confirmation email arrives — but the hotel has no record of the booking.
Some operators approach sports or entertainment event attendees on social media, offering last-minute packages that include hotels and match tickets. Payment is requested via bank transfer, and both the tickets and accommodation turn out to be fraudulent.
Visa-on-arrival visitors are particularly vulnerable because they may not be able to secure alternative accommodation quickly after discovering the fraud.
Common red flags
- Price significantly below comparable properties on established platforms
- Site URL does not precisely match a known booking platform domain
- Payment requested by bank transfer, crypto, or a payment app rather than credit card
- Confirmation email uses a generic free email domain
- Hotel cannot confirm the reservation when called directly
- Contact is only via WhatsApp and goes dark after payment
How to protect yourself
- Book accommodation directly through the hotel or a well-established global platform
- Always call the hotel directly to confirm your reservation after payment
- Pay by credit card to retain chargeback rights for travel bookings
- Verify tour and travel agents through the Qatar Tourism Authority at visitqatar.com
- Check domain registration age before booking on an unfamiliar site
- For event accommodation, use only platforms officially promoted by the event organiser
How to report it
- Report to Qatar Tourism Authority consumer complaints at visitqatar.com
- File a complaint with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry at moci.gov.qa
- Report to Qatar Ministry of Interior cybercrime unit for financial fraud
