Albania's tourism industry has expanded rapidly in recent years, with the Albanian Riviera, Gjirokastra, and Berat attracting growing numbers of visitors. This rise in tourist interest has been accompanied by a parallel rise in fake booking fraud — scammers creating convincing fake listings for Albanian accommodation and collecting deposits from unsuspecting travellers.
Budget travellers in particular are targeted, as the promise of affordable Albanian accommodation draws visitors who may be less experienced with sophisticated booking fraud.
How this scam works on Albania
Fake Albanian accommodation listings appear on search results and social media during peak travel seasons, using stolen photographs of real guesthouses and apartments on the Albanian Riviera coastline. They offer below-market rates and require a deposit via bank transfer to hold the booking.
Airbnb-style rental scams operate through Facebook Marketplace, where fake 'hosts' advertise attractive apartments in Tirana, Sarandë, or Ksamil and collect deposits for properties they have no right to rent.
Tour operator impersonation also occurs: fake websites replicating the branding of real Albanian adventure or cultural tour operators accept payment for tours that have never been booked with the genuine company.
Common red flags

- Book only through established platforms with buyer protection or directly via verified official websites
- Verify guesthouses and tour operators through the Albanian National Tourism Agency
- Reverse-image-search all property photographs before paying
- Pay by credit card to enable chargeback
- Contact the property directly via a number found independently
How to report it
- Report to the Albanian National Tourism Agency (Agjencia Kombëtare e Turizmit)
- File a complaint with the Albanian State Police
- Report fake listings to the platform on which they appeared
Frequently asked questions
How do I verify an Albanian Riviera accommodation listing is genuine?
Search for the property independently and check for consistent reviews on multiple platforms. Contact the host via a video call and pay through a platform with booking protection rather than directly to an individual.
