In many travel corridors, Telegram channels serve as the primary marketplace for private transfers, shuttles, and informal transport. Travellers who book via these channels — particularly in regions where established ride-hailing apps have limited coverage — are exposed to fraudulent operators with no accountability.
Scammers create well-structured Telegram channels with vehicle photos, rate cards, and bot-driven booking flows that appear professional. The informal trust in these regional travel communities makes victims less likely to conduct due diligence before pre-paying.
How this scam works on Telegram
A Telegram channel presents itself as a local transport service with comprehensive coverage of airports and hotels. A pricing bot responds to booking enquiries, collects details, and issues automated booking references. Payment is requested upfront via crypto or local digital wallet.
On the day of travel, the booking confirmation is not honoured. The channel either provides no driver details, offers a last-minute cancellation citing mechanical issues, or sends a completely different vehicle and driver and demands a cash top-up on arrival.
Some operators use Telegram's pinned message feature to display fabricated testimonials and announcements designed to look like active customer interactions, reinforcing the appearance of a busy, functioning operation.
Common red flags
- Transport channel that is exclusively on Telegram with no verifiable external business presence
- Booking handled entirely by a bot with no accessible human support
- Full pre-payment required via crypto or local payment app before travel
- Channel was recently created or shows no organic engagement beyond curated testimonials
- Driver details provided only at the last moment or not at all
- Rate is significantly below established taxis or airport transfer providers
How to protect yourself
- Use airport-authorised taxis, established ride-hailing apps, or hotel-arranged transfers for all airport pickups
- If using a Telegram-based operator, pay on arrival rather than in advance
- Confirm bookings by an alternative contact method on the day before travel
- Have a backup transfer option identified before you travel
- Screenshot all booking communications and channel messages for evidence if needed
- Check the operator name in the destination country's transport or taxi licensing database
How to report it
- Report the Telegram channel via the channel menu and select 'Report > Fraud'
- Dispute the payment with your bank or digital wallet provider immediately
- File a report with the destination city's transport authority
