Telegram bots have become a common interface for customer service automation, giving fraudsters a natural disguise: a bot claiming to be a carrier support tool. Victims who have come to expect bot-driven interactions with brands are less likely to question a Telegram bot that requests account verification steps.
The attack is particularly effective in regions where carriers officially communicate through messaging apps, as the boundary between legitimate and fraudulent channels becomes blurred.
How this scam works on Telegram
A Telegram channel posts an announcement mimicking a carrier — including the carrier's colour scheme and logo — warning subscribers about a required account reverification to avoid service interruption. A linked bot walks users through a simulated account verification process, capturing their carrier account credentials and a six-digit OTP.
The bot delivers a plausible-looking confirmation message while the attacker uses the captured credentials in real time to access the genuine carrier account. From there, they may initiate a port request, add a new SIM, or access sensitive account details.
Some attacks target high-value Telegram users specifically: the scammer first identifies Telegram accounts with large followings and then cross-references them with phone number exposure to launch targeted carrier takeover attacks.
Common red flags
- Telegram channel or bot claiming to offer carrier support from an unverified account
- Bot requests your carrier username, password, or a code sent by SMS
- Channel posts a service interruption warning that does not match the carrier's official communications
- Bot provides a suspiciously instant 'verification complete' message after you enter credentials
- Message arrives around the same time you receive an unexpected SMS code from your carrier
- Carrier name or logo in the Telegram channel has minor inconsistencies in formatting or colour
How to protect yourself
- Manage your carrier account exclusively through the official app or website — never through a Telegram bot
- Your carrier will never ask you to verify credentials via Telegram
- Report and block any carrier-impersonating Telegram channel or bot immediately
- Enable a PIN or port-freeze on your carrier account to prevent unauthorised porting
- Set up Telegram two-step verification to protect your account even if your phone number is ported
- Check your carrier account for unauthorised changes if you receive unexpected verification codes
How to report it
- Report the Telegram channel or bot via 'Report > Fake or Impersonation'
- Contact your carrier fraud line if you believe credentials were compromised
- Report to your national telecoms regulator
Frequently asked questions
Should I trust a Telegram bot that claims to be from my carrier?
No. Legitimate carriers do not manage account-level security via Telegram bots. Any bot or channel requesting carrier login credentials or forwarded SMS codes should be treated as fraudulent.
