Iceland's enormous tourism growth — with visitor numbers far exceeding the local population — has made it a prime target for fake accommodation and tour booking scams. Fraudulent sites impersonating well-known Reykjavik hotels, rural guesthouses, or adventure tour operators collect advance payments that they never fulfil.
Neytendastofa handles consumer complaints and can direct victims toward EU cross-border dispute resolution. Icelandic tourism operators are encouraged by the Icelandic Tourist Board (Ferðamálastofa) to register with the official registry, providing one layer of verification for travellers.
How this scam works on Iceland
A Google ad or social media post promotes a rental cottage (sumarhús) or adventure tour at below-market prices. The booking site looks professional and may use photos lifted from legitimate Icelandic tourism operators. Payment by card or bank transfer is required to secure the booking.
After payment, either no confirmation is received, or a confirmation is sent but the property or operator has no record of the booking. For ring road tours, victims arrive in Iceland expecting a guide to meet them and find no one. Customer service is unreachable once funds have been collected.
Some fraudulent sites impersonate Iceland's Northern Lights tour operators — a highly searched product — with fabricated reviews and professional photography of genuine aurora locations.

Frequently asked questions
Is Iceland's Ferðamálastofa (Tourist Board) a reliable verification source?
Ferðamálastofa maintains a registry of licensed tourism operators in Iceland. Checking ferdamalastofa.is is a good first step, but note that not all legitimate small operators are registered. Use multiple verification methods for peace of mind.
