Indonesia's booming domestic tourism — particularly to Bali, Lombok, Yogyakarta, and the Gili Islands — has generated a parallel rise in fake booking site fraud. Fraudulent sites offer below-market villa, guesthouse, and tour packages, collecting rupiah payments via bank transfer before guests arrive to find no reservation exists.
Foreign visitors are also targeted through English-language booking sites mimicking Booking.com or Airbnb for Bali properties, a destination with very high demand and limited affordable availability.
How this scam works on Indonesia
A travel search or social media ad leads to a convincing website listing a Bali villa or Lombok beach bungalow at an attractive price. The property appears real based on photos (often scraped from legitimate listing sites). Payment is required by bank transfer to a BCA or BRI account, with no platform escrow protection.
On arrival, the property either does not exist at the listed address, is unavailable (occupied by paying guests from legitimate bookings), or is completely different from the listing. In some cases, a real villa is listed but the fraudster has no authority to rent it.
WhatsApp-based booking fraud also occurs: agents approach travelers in Facebook travel groups offering exclusive rates for popular properties, collecting payment through personal WhatsApp then disappearing before the travel date.
Common red flags
- Price significantly below comparable properties on Booking.com or Airbnb for the same dates
- Payment required via direct bank transfer rather than through a platform-protected booking
- Agent communicates only through personal WhatsApp rather than property management email
- Property photos are found on multiple unrelated listings or on generic image sites
- No verifiable physical address or Google Street View confirmation of the property
- Pressure to pay immediately due to high demand for the dates
How to protect yourself
- Book through established platforms with escrow protection: Booking.com, Airbnb, Agoda
- Pay only through the platform's official payment system — never by external bank transfer
- Verify the property on Google Maps and attempt direct contact through the property's own website
- For Bali villas, cross-reference with villa management companies or the local tourism office
- Read reviews carefully for authentic, specific detail rather than generic praise
How to report it
- Report to the Ministry of Tourism at kemenparekraf.go.id
- File at Bareskrim's patrolisiber.id for cybercrime aspects
- Report to BPOM (for counterfeit accommodation services) or consumer protection at bpsk-online.id
Frequently asked questions
Are Bali villa prices dramatically cheaper through WhatsApp agents than on Airbnb?
Legitimate villa managers sometimes offer slightly lower rates for direct bookings, but dramatically lower prices — particularly requiring bank transfer payment — are a strong indicator of fraud. The small saving is not worth the risk of losing the full deposit. Use platforms with buyer protection for peace of mind.
