Online shopping is mainstream in Oman, driven by high smartphone penetration and an active social media culture. Instagram shops and Facebook Marketplace listings offer convenient access to a wide range of goods, but also provide cover for fraudulent operators who collect payment and vanish without shipping anything.
Victims who pay via bank transfer to unknown accounts have limited recourse, while those who used credit cards may be able to pursue chargebacks.
How this scam works on Oman
A social media advertisement features attractive product photography at prices 20–40% below official retailers. The 'shop' may have hundreds of likes and some positive reviews — many purchased or fabricated. Buyers contact the seller via Instagram DM or WhatsApp and are told to pay via bank transfer or crypto before shipping.
After payment, initial communication is responsive but delivery is repeatedly delayed. Eventually the seller stops responding and the shop profile is deleted or made private.
In Oman, fraudulent shops often sell popular electronics, sportswear, and branded accessories. Some operations send low-quality counterfeits to prevent immediate fraud reports.

Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to buy from individual sellers on Instagram in Oman?
It carries more risk than buying from verified platforms. Mitigate it by verifying the seller's identity, preferring cash on delivery, and checking reviews on independent sites rather than the seller's own profile.
